This virtual salon explored how universities, government and industry can work together towards the ambitious 2.4% targeted spend on R&D and position the UK as a global science superpower. We discussed new avenues for fostering effective collaboration between academia, policymakers and industry and take a forward look at the UK’s international positioning and global influence in attracting and retaining talent. As higher education recovers from the ramifications posed by the pandemic, we examined the implications for universities and local businesses in the levelling-up agenda, and how UK innovation can solve some of our greatest societal challenges.
One thing in the UK is certain, the role of universities and industry will be crucial for a knowledge-based society to fuel economic growth, build back better and reach new frontiers of technological innovation.
