    Created in 1934 when five established faculties were merged, the University of São Paulo is one of the most prestigious higher education and research institutions in Brazil and Latin America. It has an outstanding international profile and figures among the world’s best universities.

    The university is located in the state of São Paulo, in the richest and most developed region of Brazil. USP’s campuses are spread over eight cities: Bauru, Lorena, Piracicaba, Pirassununga, Ribeirão Preto, Santos, São Carlos and São Paulo. USP is active in research and teaching across the full range of sciences and humanities. Accordingly, the university offers a great variety of undergraduate and graduate programmes, as well as many extracurricular activities. As a public state institution, USP does not charge tuition fees for its undergraduate, masters and doctorate degrees.

    The University of São Paulo consists of 48 schools, 19 museums, five hospitals and 67 physical libraries. In addition, there are digital libraries, orchestras, choirs, cultural and scientific communication centres, a theatre and movie theatre, publisher, radio stations, newspaper, sports centres, technological parks and astronomical observatories.

    More than 86 per cent of USP’s faculty members are full-time, reflecting the university’s commitment to be a centre of excellence in the development of human resources and the production of knowledge. The research output of USP alone represents about 20 per cent of Brazilian scholarly production.

    USP fosters the transfer and application of knowledge generated by the research carried out in its centres and laboratories for the benefit of society. Many members of the USP community are in permanent contact with industries, companies, specialised offices and health centres, and are active in the development of projects and products and in the application of new techniques and technology.
