THE is committed to ensuring that all delegates experience a safe, inclusive and enjoyable visit to our events. To help prepare for your visit to our upcoming event, we encourage you to review the travel advice and information below.

Prior to travel, we recommend that delegates refer to the travel advice and instructions provided by their home country's embassy.

    Venue

    Basic-Medical Science Center, Semmelweis University
    Tűzoltó u. 37-47
    Budapest
    1094 Hungary

    Visas

Hungary is a Member State of the Schengen Agreement as of 21 December, 2007. From that time visas and residence permits issued by one of the Schengen Member States may be used to enter and stay in Hungary, and visas/residence permits issued by Hungarian authorities are - as a general rule - also valid for the entire Schengen Area.

As of December 2011, 26 states are part of the Schengen Area:

22 states of the 27 members of the European Union (Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden) as well as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Lichtenstein. Croatia is as of 1st January 2023 part of the Schengen Area. (For the time being 4 member states of the European Union, i.e. Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland and Romania do not issue Schengen visas.)

The Schengen regulations are only applicable for a stay not exceeding 90 days. Rules for a stay of more than 90 days are laid down by the national law of the member states concerned.

    Visa-free travel

Holders of passports issued by the countries, entities or territories listed in the table below are granted visa-free travel to Hungary for a definite period of time. In any other cases visa is necessary to enter Hungary. Visa application can be lodged at a Hungarian foreign mission in the country where the applicant legally resides.

In accordance with Article 6 (1) (a) of the Schengen Borders Code the validity of the travel document shall last until at least three months after the intended date of departure from the territory of the Member States and the travel document shall have been issued within the previous 10 years.

Please note that the list below is only for informational purposes. It is highly recommended to contact the Embassy of Hungary accredited to the country of your residence before the intended departure for further information.

We can provide visa invitation letters for ticket holders when requested. Please email a photo/scan of your passport to events@timeshighereducation.com once you have booked your ticket.

We cannot accept any responsibility for visa applications. Where a delegate is unable to attend because of failure to obtain a visa on time, the normal cancellation policy for the ticket fee will apply.

We recommend having travel insurance for the duration of your trip. Please contact your travel agent for further details.

    Accommodation

Delegates are responsible for reserving and covering the cost of accommodation for the duration of their stay.

    Safety advice and emergency contacts

To protect your personal safety we recommend:

    • avoiding having valuables on show
    • taking safe and reliable transport
    • travelling with colleagues or other delegates, especially at night
    • being alert in crowded and tourist areas, airports, restaurants, pubs and bars and on public transport
    • keeping your card in sight and concealing your PIN when using ATMs and paying by card

Hungary's main emergency service number is 112. Call this number if you need urgent help from police, fire or ambulance services.

    FAQs

    What is the main language?
Hungarian is the main language, however English serves as an informal second language and is widely spoken in urban areas.

    Which currency can I use?
Hungary’s currency is the forint (HUF) with notes in denominations of 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000 and 20,000. While most shops and restaurants accept credit cards, it is still a good idea to have some cash on you. ATMs are easily accessible in most shopping malls, petrol stations and supermarkets.

    Which plug socket is used?
Hungary uses type C and F plug sockets with two round pins. The standard voltage is 230 V at a frequency of 50 Hz. We would recommend bringing a universal adapter.

    Will wi-fi be available?
Free wi-fi is available throughout the university's buildings. Connection details will be displayed at the check-in desk.

    Are there data roaming charges?
You will need to check the exact charges with your network provider but most international delegates will incur high data roaming charges. We recommend buying an eSIM via Airalo which gives you 1GB of data for 7 days for US$4.50. Use our referral code TIMESH7718 for US$3 off. We recommend checking that your phone supports eSIMs before making your purchase.

Is tap water safe to drink?
Tap water in Budapest is safe to drink and cook with.

Do you have any guidance for LGBTQ+ delegates?
Homosexuality is legal and it is illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation. For more information and advice for LGBTQ+ travellers, visit the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association's website.
