    Greetings from Newcastle University

UK higher education is privileged to be supported by exceptional communications and marketing professionals and it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Newcastle University for the HashtagHigherEd UK 2023 conference.

In an age when global higher education is an increasingly crowded marketplace and universities are rarely out of the media spotlight, your role has never been more complex and critical as we strive to do everything from attracting the best students to influencing government policy.

How we are perceived – internally by our colleagues and students, and by prospective students, parents, alumni and stakeholders at home and abroad – has never been more important.

So how do we build clear and focused communications and marketing strategies that are able to deliver our institutional goals and make us stand out, while cutting through the noise of financial pressure and geo-political challenge, and grappling with legislation and league tables?

Over the course of this two-day conference, you will have the opportunity to examine these issues in depth with colleagues who are among our sector’s leading lights.

    It is a stimulating programme.

I hope you will enjoy contributing, learning, sharing best practice and experiences – good and bad – and I hope too that you enjoy spending time at our university and in the city of Newcastle. We look forward to hosting you in April.

    About Newcastle University

A Global Top 125 university (QS World University Rankings 2023), Newcastle University is home to 29,000 students from 140 countries.

A founding member of the Russell Group, we are one of only 19 universities in the world – and just three in the UK – to achieve a five-plus QS Star rating for overall excellence (2022).

We can trace our origins back to the School of Medicine and Surgery, established in 1834. Our Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering recently marked 150 years of invention and innovation.

Today, we combine world-leading research with a world-class academic experience.

A global leader in the key research strengths of ageing and health, data, energy, cities, and the creative arts, we are pioneering solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing the world.

Through 5-star teaching (QS Stars 2022), we educate for life. Students are challenged and supported to learn from world-class experts and academics across more than 185 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate degrees.

We are a partner in the £350 million Newcastle Helix, a global centre for science, technology, research and education. We host three national innovation centres in ageing, data and rural enterprises, and are home to an Urban Observatory, the largest sensor deployment in the UK and the largest set of open environmental monitoring data in the world.

Proud to be a University of Sanctuary, we promote a campus and community-wide culture of welcome, engagement and safety for people fleeing persecution and violence.

We were also one of the first universities to sign up to the UK Government’s Emissions Reduction Pledge and are working to reach net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2030.
