    Covid-19 requirements

Conference delegates, event attendees, visitors, and staff are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and to have received a COVID-19 booster shot (if eligible for the booster based onCDC criteria), and proof of vaccination must be verified.

Vaccination documentation must be uploaded to the NYU system to be reviewed before the summit.

Participants may request an exemption from these requirements for valid medical or religious reasons. Those requesting medical or religious exemption requests must submit their exemption requests along with a negative PCR test result within 72 hours prior to accessing NYU’s campus.

NYU will follow a pre-arrival vaccine verification process. Following your registration, please look out for an email from NYU Campus Safety requesting that you upload your proof of vaccination and booster. Once your documentation is reviewed, you will receive a notice if you are approved or if further details are required.

Exemptions from the vaccination policy are permitted only for medical or religious reasons. Participants who wish to claim a medical or religious exemption must do so in advance and must have their exemption approved in advance. (Learn more about acceptable medical and religious exemptions.) Exemptions and test results must be reviewed in advance, not upon your arrival at the summit.

Once delegates have been approved or have had their exemption approved, they will be able to access NYU’s “Violet Go” pass.  Delegates will be asked to show this Violet Go pass and a government-issued photo ID card when entering campus buildings.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I show a negative Covid-19 test result instead of vaccination proof?

No, negative test results will not be accepted as an alternative to vaccination proof, except for those with a valid medical or religious exemption to vaccination.

When am I considered fully vaccinated?

You are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving a second dose in a two-dose vaccine series (e.g., Pfizer, Moderna, WHO-listed vaccine) or two weeks after receiving a single-dose vaccine (i.e., Johnson & Johnson's Janssen). In addition to being fully vaccinated, NYU also requires that you have a booster dose if eligible (based on CDC eligibility criteria).

How do I determine if I'm eligible for a booster shot?

NYU will allow a one-week grace period to schedule and receive the booster upon becoming eligible, after which point you are deemed non-compliant.

    • Pfizer or Moderna: eligible for a booster five months after your second dose
    • Johnson & Johnson: eligible for a booster two months after your single dose
    • Anyone who has received all the recommended doses of another WHO-listed vaccine that is not approved or authorised by the FDA or completed a mix and match series composed of any combination of FDA-approved, FDA-authorised or WHO-listed vaccines becomes eligible for a booster five months after their last dose.

Use our Covid-19 booster calculator to determine the day you are eligible. Learn more about who is eligible on the CDC website.

What if my proof of vaccination is in a different language?

We cannot accept documentation in languages other than English. We recommend that you get your documentation translated into English.

I misplaced my vaccination documentation, it is difficult to read or it was destroyed. What are my options?

You need to obtain replacement documentation that meets the criteria above. Your options will depend on where you were vaccinated.

    • If you received your Covid-19 vaccinations in the states of New York or New Jersey, you can download your vaccination details using the following free services or apps. Please download your full vaccination details (including your name, birth date and the vaccination dates and manufacturer), not the QR code pass.
      • New York State Excelsior Plus app
      • New Jersey Docket app
      • NYC My Vaccine Record
    • Check to see if your state uses the Smart Health Card.
    • Obtain the EU Digital Covid Certificate.
    • Some state or regional districts have a vaccination portal where you can view and download vaccines administered in that state or region. Check with your local department of health.
    • Many pharmacy chains can provide an app or printout of your vaccination details.
    • Your medical provider or hospital may have an app or online medical record system that allows you to download, export, print, or review your vaccination record.

What happens if NYU’s vaccination policies differ from those of my region or country?

You must comply with NYU’s vaccination policy in order to access NYU settings and NYU-sponsored activities that take place off-campus, even if it differs from the vaccination requirements in your own country or region.

How can I get a booster shot when I arrive in New York?

Covid-19 vaccines, including booster shots, are widely available in the US for free. You can use the US or NYC vaccine finder to schedule a vaccination appointment for when you arrive in the country. If you are receiving a booster shot, you will need to show proof of primary series vaccination in English.

How can I pursue a medical or religious exemption?

Visitors, vendors and affiliates may request an exemption from the vaccination requirements for medical or religious reasons through the Visitors Exemption Process. Those who are not vaccinated for reasons other than a valid medical or religious reason do not qualify for the Covid-19 vaccination exemption process. There is no guarantee your request will be approved.

What if I am not vaccinated for reasons other than a valid medical or religious reason?

You are not permitted to access NYU settings and NYU-sponsored activities that take place off campus.

What if I received my primary vaccine but have a medical reason to not get the booster?

Visitors, vendors and affiliates may request an exemption from the booster requirement for medical reasons through the Visitors Exemption Process. There is no guarantee that your request will be approved.

Can I upload a vaccination document the same day and expect same-day access to NYU buildings or activities?

No, due to the volume of access requests, same-day submissions are not permitted. You must upload your documentation at least 5 business days (not including weekends) before the desired visit.

My vaccination documentation was rejected. What should I do?

When a document is declined, the reason is provided in the email response. Please correct the issues with your vaccination document and resubmit it for review.

Q: I have not received a booster yet. Is this required?

Yes, NYU’s vaccination policy requires that all those who visit campus are fully vaccinated and boosted, if eligible.

If you wish to claim a medical exemption or religious exemption, you can do so. Please see this information about how to claim a medical or religious exemption. We cannot guarantee that medical or religious exemptions will be accepted by NYU’s public health team.

Q: How do I know if I am eligible for a booster?

See NYU’s vaccine calculator to calculate if you are eligible for a booster or the guidance from the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Q: Am I required to download the NYU Mobile app to access my Violet Go pass?

Once you are approved to access campus, you will need to show a purple Violet Go pass.  You can generate a pass through either this website or by downloading the NYU Mobile app.

Q: I need to request a medical or religious exemption. How do I do that?

If you wish to claim a religious or medical exemption, you do not need to show documentation of this exemption.  You will need to upload proof of a negative PCR test within three days in advance of your arrival to campus.  For example, if you are arriving on campus on Monday, October 10, you should plan on taking a PCR test no earlier than Friday, October 7.  As soon as you receive your results, you can upload them to the Veoci system, using this link.  You do not need to take any action until three days before your arrival when you request your exemption and upload your vaccination proof at the same time.

Q: I have questions about the vaccination and booster policy. Whom can I speak with?

Please reach out to Sara McCarthy in NYU’s Office of University Events at sem9883@nyu.edu or 212-998-6863. Sara will assist you.
