The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) – Sustainability spotlight

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) defines sustainability as “creating the conditions for people to thrive, over time, and within planetary boundaries”. These three elements – a focus on the well-being of our community; a commitment to progress over time; and a clear-eyed understanding of our planetary resource limitations – inform our thinking and planning at the university level.

To guide our mission, HKUST has adopted our 2028 Sustainability Challenges, a wide-ranging set of goals covering operations, education, research and demonstration, and network, while our Net-Zero Action Plan serves as a strategic guide to realise our commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.

As a strong convening force connecting business, industry, government and entrepreneurs, HKUST continuously seeks out avenues to transform research into impactful solutions and to ensure that our education nurtures the next generation of innovators. In 2024, HKUST ranked 19th in the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking.

At this year’s Global Sustainable Development Congress, we are pleased to be Times Higher Education’s partner for the Cities and communities track. We look forward to sharing and learning together through our hosted sessions:

Professor Hong Lo will highlight the key elements that drive smart innovations for sustainable cities and communities.
Dr Kenneth Leung will join an expert panel to discuss the key factors for successful university-city engagements.
Marcus Leung-Shea will share what we have learned from nurturing more than 40 Living Labs projects since 2019.
Dr Alison Elizabeth Lloyd, Professor Alexis Lau and Professor Fei Chen’s panel discussion will examine universities' pivotal role in enhancing urban climate resilience, focusing on using predictive analytics to tackle climate-related challenges.
