Welcome to Lancaster University
We are proud to be hosting Digital Universities UK 2025 at our campus in north-west England. As your host, we look forward to an exciting, informative and collaborative conference that will showcase the ambitious and distinctive ways in which Lancaster is working at the forefront of digital transformation in higher education. You will have the chance to immerse yourself in some of the innovative technology that will revolutionise the ways our students learn and is enhancing the capabilities of our researchers.
Digital Universities UK 2025 will be a fantastic opportunity for you to explore the latest trends and technologies that are transforming research, pedagogy and learning at universities. Higher education is built on global connections, innovating and collaborating; these are things our sector does instinctively and with great skill. Delegates will be able to learn from each other to gain a better understanding of how digital technologies can positively change the way higher education institutions operate. We have a lot to celebrate and much to discover.
As we embrace this age of rapid digital advancement and the great benefits that such advancements bring, this must be tempered with consideration of other issues such as cybersecurity, our well-being, equality of opportunity and the sustainability of our planet. Universities are central to expanding knowledge and highlighting impacts on society.
As Lancaster University has grown as a global institution, sustainability has been central to the content and ways in which we research and share knowledge globally. Digital technologies have undoubtedly made this process easier, but we believe true advancement means ensuring that we are bringing everyone along the journey with us and that our overall impact is positive.
During this conference, we hope you will enjoy the many opportunities to learn, network and share experience and expertise. I would also recommend stepping away from screens to explore our beautiful campus and the historic city of Lancaster.

Digital at Lancaster University
Digital innovation is driving our ambition to be an organisation that is fully agile, optimised and future proofed. Lancaster University is making significant investment to deliver a five-year digital strategy that cuts across eight themes including process automation, human-centred design, cloud enablement and a global Lancaster experience.
Harnessing the power of digital technology has already enabled us to develop and build our global connections, creating powerful research groups that are truly world leading. Whether we are participating in one of the largest scientific experiments in CERN, delivering broadband to remote rural communities, navigating the complexities of Covid-19 or working in partnerships to protect security, here at Lancaster we have placed digital innovation at the heart of our work.
Recognising the enormous impact that digital advancements are making on the expectations of researchers, students, academics and industry partners, we are investing to ensure that our facilities and resources offer a premium experience to all our stakeholders.
We are a leading UK institution in digital research and teaching practices on cybersecurity and protection science. Our multi-million-pound investment in data and cybersecurity research, teaching and innovation capabilities at our Lancaster campus supports the UK government’s incoming National Cyber Force and the development of the North West Cyber Corridor.
A £13 million capacity-building project is under way within our School of Mathematical Sciences. The investment will deliver new research, teaching and learning opportunities in the Mathematics for AI in Real-world Systems centre. Lancaster University experts will be exploring how AI can be applied to real-world issues in cybersecurity engineering, environment and health.
The Future Cities Research Institute, based at our partner campus at Sunway University, Malaysia, is looking at the challenges facing urban environments. Alongside issues around sustainability, resilience and health, the institute explores new ways of how best to exploit technology in the cities of tomorrow.
Lancaster University’s interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching ensures a holistic perspective on the impact of digital technologies and their wider application in education and society.
