Greetings from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China

Around the world, higher education is accelerating its digital transformation. Digital technologies are reshaping teaching, learning and campus life, placing universities at a pivotal moment. As we build smart campuses and nurture the next generation of innovators, our responsibilities expand, and the expectations of students, alumni and society rise.

In this period of change, we and our peers worldwide confront shared, urgent questions: How can digital tools better foster exceptional talent? How can innovation be translated into sustainable development momentum? And how can Asia’s collective strength help guide global educational transformation? This summit offers an important opportunity to reflect on these questions together. Over two days, leading scholars and practitioners in digital education will gather to exchange ideas, share experience, and explore new possibilities. The discussions ahead promise to be both substantive and inspiring.

At the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, we have long been committed to advancing the frontiers of electronic and information sciences. We pursue innovation, deepen international cooperation, and work with partners worldwide to help shape a more open and connected global higher-education landscape. On behalf of UESTC, I am delighted to welcome university leaders, industry partners and academic colleagues to Digital Universities Asia 2026. We look forward to meeting you in Chengdu, land of abundance, this September—to engage in open dialogue, learn from one another and work together to chart the future of the digital university.

    Professor Jun Hu
    President
University of Electronic Science and Technology of China

    Our heritage

Renowned as China’s cradle of the national electronic industry, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) is situated in Chengdu, the hometown of the giant pandas. Crowned as the "land of abundance", the city has a history of over 3,000 years.

UESTC was founded in 1956 under the direction of Premier Zhou Enlai by the merging of the electrical engineering departments of three top engineering universities in China: Jiaotong University, Nanjing Institute of Technology and South China Institute of Technology. It became one of China’s key universities in 1960. It was selected as one of the first “Project 211” universities in 1997 and as one of the "Project 985" universities in 2001. In 2017, UESTC was named a "Double First-Class" university.

    Research-intensive university

Over seven decades of endeavour, evolved into a comprehensive research university, UESTC now turns out to be a key multidisciplinary university with electronic science and technology as its nucleus, engineering as its major field and featured the harmonious integration of engineering, science, management, humanities and medicine, emerging as a top-tier research-intensive university.

Electronic information science and technology is rapidly driving new high-tech developments, bringing about new opportunities and challenges. UESTC holds to its notion "To seek facts and truth, to be noble and ambitious" in the pursuit of excellence and embarks on the journey to a more glorious future.

    Discipline strengths

According to the latest Global Ranking by Essential Science Indicators (ESI), Computer Science at UESTC is ranked among the global top 1‱, and Engineering, Materials Science and Chemistry are ranked among the global top 1‰. Other disciplines ranked among the global top 1% include: physics, clinical medicine, neuroscience and behaviour, geosciences, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, environment/ecology, mathematics, plant and animal science, pharmacology and toxicology, psychiatry/psychology and social sciences.

    International approach

Actively promoting internationalisation, UESTC has established cooperative relations with more than 200 universities, scientific research institutions and enterprises in more than 70 countries and regions.

We value student exchange and believe UESTC students must have global perspectives and gain international experience. Over 25% of our students have overseas study experience in as many as 50 countries and regions. At present, there are more than 1,000 long-term international students from over 100 countries and regions. In addition, we have been actively nurturing international elites through joint undergraduate, master’s and PhD programmes with prestigious universities, including the University of Glasgow (UK), ESIGELEC (France), ISCTE—University Institute of Lisbon (Portugal) and Webster University (US).

At the same time, we attach great importance to the training and development of our faculty. We have set up faculty training centres with the McGill University (Canada) and the University of Glasgow (UK), and established sister-university partnerships with the College of William & Mary (US) and Pohang University of Science and Technology (South Korea). These domestic and international educational partnerships have placed UESTC in an advantageous position for talent cultivation.
