Shaping a healthier future through innovation, entrepreneurship and partnerships

The rapid evolution of digital health innovation holds immense potential to revolutionise patient care and improve global health outcomes. Achieving this transformation hinges on effectively harnessing healthcare data, adopting cutting-edge technologies and AI, fostering ethical policy development and supporting entrepreneurial efforts.

Hosted in partnership with the University of Waterloo, Digital Health 2025 convened global leaders across key sectors – healthcare, academia, government and start-ups – to explore how effective collaboration can drive the development and implementation of scalable digital health solutions.

Digital health is ultimately a fusion of technology and biology. This meeting brings it all! Really outstanding two days of discussion and interaction.

    – Calum MacRae, Professor, Harvard Medical School

    Agenda themes

    AI and health technologies

This theme explored the transformative role of AI in healthcare, with a focus on its ability to advance population and planetary health. Industry experts presented keynotes showcasing research into how AI can identify and manage health risks, drive behaviour change and streamline workflows.

    • AI’s applications in personalised medicine
    • Predictive analytics and real-time monitoring
    • The integration of emerging technologies such as quantum computing and GenAI into digital health

    Collaboration and commercialisation

Collaboration was the event's key theme as we highlighted the importance of partnerships across sectors to drive the development and adoption of digital technology in healthcare. Discussions focused on building research partnerships, integrating digital health tools into clinical settings and overcoming barriers to commercialising technologies.

    • Public-private partnerships
    • Data sharing
    • Funding strategies to support the growth of digital health innovations, alongside the challenges of navigating healthcare compliance and regulatory considerations

Responsible innovation, ethics and healthcare equity

Ethics and equity were central to the discussions, particularly regarding the responsible implementation of new technologies. We explored how innovation can be guided to ensure equitable access to healthcare, especially for under-served populations. Panel discussions focused on the growing development of digital health solutions to support the ageing population and those with mental health challenges.

    • Issues of bias in AI, Large Language Models (LLMs) and Machine Learning (ML)
    • Data privacy
    • Ethical use of digital health tools

The University of Waterloo has long been known as a leader in technology and innovation, delivering solutions with both social and economic impact. In the area of digital health, we are uniquely positioned to shape technology to serve society, rather than letting technology shape us. The complexity of the challenges we are facing within healthcare will require diverse and interdisciplinary solutions.

    – Vivek Goel, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Waterloo
