HKUST is at the forefront of entrepreneurship and knowledge transfer, transforming groundbreaking research into real-world impact. As of November 2024, HKUST members have founded over 1,800 active start-ups, including 10 unicorns and 16 exits (IPO or M&A). The university is a key partner in the Chang’e 8 International Cooperation Project, has launched Hong Kong’s first university satellite, and is home to the city’s first Division of Arts and Machine Creativity, integrating technology with the humanities. It is advancing the development of the low-altitude economy via the HKUST Low Altitude Economy Research Center (LAERC), which spearheads research in aerial mobility, drone logistics and urban airspace management.
